Aged Bo Hojicha (3Yrs) | 三年番茶
$10.00 – $23.00Price range: $10.00 through $23.00
Enticed by a coffee-like aroma, warmed by gentle sweetness.
The moment you open the bag, you’ll know this tea is different. A bold roasted aroma, smoky and woody, with something chocolatey underneath. Most people say the same thing: “this smells like coffee.” It might even feel oddly familiar — not foreign at all, just unexpected from a Japanese tea.
But for all that boldness in the aroma, the taste tells a different story. There’s nothing showy or punchy here. It’s one of the gentlest, most easy-going teas we carry. The flavour is transparent and woody at its core, edged with a quiet smokiness and a slow, soft sweetness that unfolds gradually. The body is light, almost like mugicha (roasted barley tea) in its easy drinkability and smoky warmth. And after the last sip, there’s a roasty glow that lingers in your mouth, a warmth that settles into your body — the kind of comfort that, here in Canada, reminded us of how we feel after a good cup of coffee.
It pairs wonderfully with sweets — think of it the way you’d enjoy a coffee with a doughnut at your favourite café. And it’s just as good as an after-meal tea, clearing the palate after a rich dish.
This is also the lowest caffeine tea in our entire lineup — just 0.004g per 100g, far less than the 0.02g typically found in sencha. It’s also organic, certified under Japan’s JAS standard. As a natural daily tea or a genuine coffee alternative — it’s one for everyone, any time of day.
We carry a family of Bo (stem) teas — each with its own character. For something more pronounced with a bolder aroma, try our Bo Hojicha. For even fuller depth — brothy, premium, almost sencha-like — see our Hand Roasted Bo Hojicha. And for the unroasted side of stems — green, sweet, and clean — there’s our Kukicha.

About Sannenbancha (三年番茶)
This tea belongs to a tradition called sannenbancha (三年番茶) — tea made from mature twigs and stems, aged for three years before roasting. In Japan, it’s long been valued as a mild, easy-drinking tea with very low caffeine, enjoyed by all ages and often served in the evening.
The sweetness and aroma that define this tea come from the twigs and stems themselves — in this case, closer to twig than stem, woodier and more mature than the tender kenbo used in our Bo Hojicha. Three years of aging rounds out the flavour, mellowing any sharpness and deepening the natural sweetness.
Aging is not common in Japanese green tea, where freshness is prized — especially in shincha season. But it is a respected technique. In the matcha tradition, kuchikiri (口切り) involves aging tea for months before milling to deepen flavour. Our Benifuki black tea is also aged to soften its character. This sannenbancha follows a similar philosophy — patience as an ingredient.

Very good, primary scents are pine wood, coffee, molasses, maple syrup. Primary tastes are tree sap, coffee, maple water, wood and chocolate. We like it brewed strong since these are all quite subtle flavors.
