Snacky, toasty, impossibly easy to drink
In Japan, genmaicha is considered an everyday, affordable tea — and most are made that way, with affordable leaves and matcha used to smooth things over. This one isn’t like those.
The base is mountain-grown tea from over 800 metres elevation in Honyama, lightly steamed to preserve the character of the leaf. Light steaming keeps the tea’s natural flavour intact rather than breaking it down, so what you taste is the mountain terroir itself — clean, defined, and present — alongside the roasted rice. The matcha is used sparingly, not to mask, but to refine the finish. The whole blend is carefully crafted by the tea masters at Hagiri, and it shows. The result is a genmaicha with a snacky, almost addictive quality — light enough to drink cup after cup, but layered enough that you actually taste something every time.
We originally started carrying this as a complement to our Genmaicha from Ikumi, which has limited production and can’t always keep up with demand. But customer response to this tea was so strong — it quickly became a permanent part of our lineup on its own merit.

What Is Matcha Genmaicha?
Matcha genmaicha is a Japanese green tea that combines sencha leaves, toasted brown rice (genmai), and a fine dusting of matcha powder. The matcha adds a vibrant green colour and a smooth, creamy body to the classic toasty flavour of regular genmaicha.
Unlike plain genmaicha, the matcha coating gives this tea a richer umami character and a slightly thicker mouthfeel — while keeping the comforting, nutty quality that makes genmaicha one of Japan’s most popular everyday teas.
Matcha Genmaicha vs Regular Genmaicha
Regular genmaicha has a clean, toasty flavour driven by the roasted rice. Matcha genmaicha adds another layer — the matcha brings a gentle sweetness, deeper green colour, and a smooth finish that lingers a little longer. The overall taste is slightly richer and more full-bodied.

Caffeine in Matcha Genmaicha
Matcha genmaicha contains a moderate amount of caffeine — more than plain genmaicha due to the added matcha, but less than a full bowl of matcha on its own. Expect roughly 30–50 mg per cup, making it a gentle pick-me-up that works well any time of day.
How to Brew Matcha Genmaicha
Use 3–4 g of tea per 100 ml of water at 90°C (194°F). Steep for about 1 minute. The matcha dissolves quickly, so give the pot a gentle swirl before pouring.
This tea is forgiving — even with slightly hotter water or a longer steep, the roasted rice keeps the flavour balanced and smooth. Good for 2–3 steepings, though the matcha flavour will be strongest in the first cup.
