Hand Roasted Bo Hojicha | 手炒り棒ほうじ茶 – 50g
$34.00
Made to order from Japan — artisanal hojicha.
Our Bo Hojicha is already one of our finest teas, but this one is an even more exceptional selection. It is hand-roasted in small quantities using a traditional hōroku (焙烙), an unglazed earthenware pan that has been used in Japan for centuries to dry-roast tea leaves, grains, and beans. This tea is made to order by a master roaster, with production limited to just two bags per day.
The result is a purified, exceptionally clear flavor, with none of the bitterness or heaviness, leaving behind only gentle sweetness. Only the lightest, most floral and fruity notes remain, giving the tea a sense of transparency and freshness. The delicately roasted stems are fluffy, yet retain their beautiful, sharp shape.
Just as one might feel a sense of reverence when gazing at a handcrafted piece of wagashi, a fine pottery bowl, a chasen (tea whisk), or the brushwork of Japanese calligraphy, this tea also carries the quiet beauty of craftsmanship. From the shape of the stems to the gentle aroma, every detail reflects the hands and heart of the maker.

What is a tea refiner?
A tea refiner is a company led by seasoned tea professionals—often referred to as tea masters, or Chashi (茶師) in Japanese—who possess deep, hands-on knowledge of both tea farming and consumer preferences. With finely tuned senses and a discerning palate developed through years of experience, they tirelessly seek out and procure high-quality teas, whether directly from farmers or through tea markets.
Tea refiners, especially those based in production regions like Shizuoka, actively build relationships with local growers and often work closely with them. Through processes such as final firing, sorting, and blending, refiners enhance the flavor, aroma, and overall quality of the tea—bringing out its full potential.
While they may appear to be just wholesalers, each tea refiner has a unique philosophy, a preferred flavor profile, and distinct strengths. These differences are reflected in the final taste of the tea, adding another layer of uniqueness on top of the tea’s original characteristics, such as cultivar and terroir.
