Hojicha Chai | ほうじ茶チャイ — 12 Tea Bags
$25.00
A warm, gentle chai that quietly wraps around you.
This hojicha chai is nothing like a typical spiced tea. It doesn’t hit you with bold spice or sharp sweetness — instead, it warms you slowly from the inside out. The roasty softness of hojicha meets cinnamon, clove, and ginger in a balance so gentle that no single ingredient dominates. Just a quiet, natural warmth. On its own, it’s soothing and comforting. Simmered in oat milk, it becomes a hojicha chai latte with a creamy, toasty depth — the kind of drink that makes you pause and take a breath.
Grown at 830 metres, in one of Japan’s most remote tea regions. The hojicha in this blend is grown in Umegashima (梅ヶ島), a mountainous area deep in the heart of Shizuoka. Tea fields are scattered across steep slopes at elevations reaching 830 metres, where the cool, misty climate resembles Darjeeling. The producers here practice natural farming — no pesticides, no synthetic fertilizers.
Along with Yabukita, the blend includes Zairai — native tea plants whose roots trace back to ancient seeds brought to Shizuoka from China centuries ago. The spices are imported, but carefully selected: pesticide-free, chemical-free, and tested by an independent German laboratory. This is chai for people who want to feel calm, not just warm.

What Is Hojicha Chai?
Hojicha chai is a Japanese twist on traditional chai. Instead of using black tea as the base, it’s built on hojicha — a roasted Japanese green tea with a naturally toasty, low-caffeine character. The roasted warmth of hojicha blends naturally with chai spices, creating something gentler and more mellow than a typical Indian-style chai.
If you find regular chai too intense or too caffeinated, hojicha chai offers the same warming comfort with a softer, smoother finish.
What Is Hojicha?
Hojicha (ほうじ茶) is a Japanese green tea that has been roasted at high temperatures, giving it a warm brown colour and a distinctive toasty, caramel-like aroma. Unlike most green teas, hojicha is very low in bitterness and astringency. It’s one of the most popular everyday teas in Japan, often served with meals or in the evening because of its naturally low caffeine content.
Hojicha Chai vs Regular Chai
Traditional chai uses black tea — bold, malty, and high in caffeine — as the base for spices like cinnamon, cardamom, and ginger. Hojicha chai replaces the black tea with roasted Japanese green tea. The result is a lighter, more delicate chai where the spices and the tea complement each other rather than competing. The roasty sweetness of hojicha adds a unique warmth that you won’t find in any other chai.
Caffeine in Hojicha Chai
Hojicha is one of the lowest-caffeine Japanese teas because roasting reduces caffeine content significantly. Combined with spices, a cup of hojicha chai contains roughly 15–30 mg of caffeine — about a quarter of a cup of coffee. This makes it a good option for afternoons, evenings, or anyone looking to reduce caffeine intake without giving up flavourful tea.
How to Brew Hojicha Chai
For a straight cup, steep 1 tea bag in 150–250 ml of hot water (just off the boil) for 2–3 minutes.
For a traditional chai with milk, place 1 tea bag in 100 ml of hot water and simmer on low heat for 5–8 minutes. Add 100 ml (or your preferred amount) of milk, increase to high heat while stirring to prevent sticking, and turn off the heat just before boiling. Pour into a cup and add sweetener to taste.

Very unique chai that I guarantee you would have never tasted anything like it before. Delicate flavor so we like to brew it strong. Next time we are going to try simmering it in milk for a hojicha chai latte!!
